Trace Environmental Analysis
Course Syllabus
A – COURSE IDENTIFICATION
Year: 2014, Semester 2
Course level: Graduate
Credit hours: 3
Lecturer: Professor Ta-Chang Lin
B - BRIEF DESCRIPTION
This course introduces necessary chemical knowledge required in carrying out trace environmental analysis. It covers pretreatment of environmental samples, qualitative and quantitative methods in chemical analysis, some principles of instrumental analysis, and QA/QC in the laboratory.
C - OBJECTIVES
1. Purpose of the course
To provide students of Environmental Engineering with basic knowledge of trace environmental chemical analysis, including sample preparation techniques, qualitative and quantitative analytical methods for organic and inorganic analytes, and principles of instrumental analysis.
2. Expected outcomes of the course
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
- Understand the general principles of sample preparation techniques for environmental samples, including air, water, waste and soil samples.
- Understand the general principles of qualitative and quantitative methods of chemical analyses.
- Understand the general principles of the major instruments used in trace environmental analysis -- including Gas Chromatography, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, and Inductively-Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer.
- Be able to understand and implement most of the quantitative chemical analyses set out in standard or official methods manuals.
D – GRADING POLICY
Exams: There will be a midterm and a final exam. Each exam will count 35% of the grade.
Homework: All homework assignments will count 10% of the grade.
Presentation: At the end of the course each student will have a 15-minute paper presentation (in English) which includes questions and discussion. This presentation will count 20% of the grade.
