古代希臘史
課程目的:
本課程將授與學生有關古代希臘史的一般性介紹,從邁諾—邁希尼文明(Mino-Mycenaean Civilization)(約西元前15世紀)到古典時期(Classical Age)結束(約西元前323年)。它將由一連串的演講及討論會所構成。學生將被要求閱讀不同性質的史料,以學習對史料的判讀能力。雖然它主要的是以政治史為主的歷史,但對政治發展背後的理念及其他古代世界知名的文化成就,亦會多加著力。
本課成基本上以講演為主(原則上,課堂上會分發講義),但會因為單元性質的不同,加入其他有助於同學瞭解的材料及進行方式。
課程大綱:本課程將分為兩大單位,大致以波斯戰爭做為分界。
第一部分將涵蓋史前時期降至前古典時期(Archaic Age)的中段,所討論的主題有:(1)邁諾—邁希尼文明及荷馬史詩;(2)市民城邦(polis)之崛起及其意涵;(3)希臘海外殖民;(4)泛希臘主義(Pan-Hellenism);(5)斯巴達神話;(6)雅典民主改革。
第二部分將涵蓋前古典時期結束以及整個古典時期,所討論主題有:(1)波斯戰爭;(2)雅典及雅典帝國的崛起;(3)古典雅典的文化成就;(4)婆羅奔尼撒戰爭;(5)斯巴達獨霸;(6)斯巴達之崩潰:社會學的解釋;(7)底比斯(Thebes)之霸業;及(8)馬其頓(Macedonia)的興起。
評量:
學生將被要求在學期中呈交報告一篇(40%),並參加期末考試(50%);課堂表現將佔10%。

Ancient Greek History
Purpose of this Course
This course will give students a general survey of ancient Greek history, stretching from the Mino-Mycenaean civilization (ca. 15th Cent. BCE) down to the end of Classical Age in 323 BCE. It will constitute of a series of lectures and seminars. Students will be asked to read historical sources of various kinds, by which this history is rendered possible. Though it is mainly a history of political nature, much attention will be paid to the ideas, that lay behind the political development, as well as other cultural achievement the ancient Greeks were so noted for.
Structure and Content of this Course: it consists of two parts, divided around the outbreak of the Persian Wars
The first part will cover the pre-historic period as well as the first half of the Archaic Age, and the topics that will be covered are (1) the Mino-Mycenaean civilization and Homer; (2) the rise of polis and its various implications; (3) Greek overseas colonization; (4) pan-hellenism; (5) the Spartan myth; (6) Athenian democratic reform.
The second part will cover the end of the Archaic Age as well as the whole Classical Age and the topics that will be dealt with include; (1) Persian Wars; (2) the rise of Athens and the Athenian Empire; (3) the cultural achievement of Classical Athens; (4) the Peloponnesian War; (5) Spartan hegemony; (6) the collapse of Sparta: a sociological investigation; (7) Theban hegemony and (8) the rise of Macedonia.
Assessment
Students will be asked to submit a mid-term paper (40%) and undertake a final examination paper (50%); 10% will be for the classroom performance.
